What is AA Battery?

AA battery is a common battery model specification. It refers to a cylindrical battery with a diameter of about 14.5mm (0.57 inches) and a length of about 50.5mm (1.99 inches). Different types of AA batteries will have differences. Below we will introduce them in detail from several aspects:

What is AA Battery?

Different Types of AA Batteries

1. Carbon AA Battery

Carbon AA battery is also called carbon zinc battery or zinc manganese battery, which is a disposable dry battery.

Voltage: 1.5v

Capacity: usually 700~1200mah, lower than alkaline battery.

Discharge Characteristics: voltage drops quickly with discharge, the curve is relatively steep.

Self-discharge Rate: medium

Temperature Performance: better performance in the range of 0°C to 40°C, poor performance at low temperature.

Shelf Life: usually 2-3 years at room temperature.

2. Alkaline AA Battery

Alkaline AA battery is a widely used disposable battery, belonging to the primary battery type.

Voltage: 1.5v

Capacity: usually 1800~2800mah.

Discharge Characteristics: The voltage drops slowly with discharge, relatively stable.

Self-discharge rate: low

Temperature Performance: The normal operating temperature range is generally -20°C~45°C.

Shelf Life: usually 5-7 years at room temperature.

3. Nickel-cadmium AA Battery

Nickel-cadmium (NiCd) AA battery is a rechargeable battery.

Voltage: 1.2v

Capacity:  usually 700~1000mah.

Discharge Characteristics: suitable for large current discharge.

Temperature Performance: operating temperature range -20°C to 60°C.

Cycle Life: 500-1000 times

4. NiMH AA Battery

NiMH AA battery is a rechargeable battery, belonging to the secondary battery type.

Voltage: 1.2v

Capacity: usually 1900~2900mAh, high capacity type can reach more than 3000mAh.

Discharge Characteristics:internal resistance is lower than alkaline batteries, which is conducive to large current discharge.

Temperature Performance: operating temperature range -20°C to 60°C.

Cycle Life: 500-1000 times

5. Lithium-ion AA Battery

Lithium-ion AA battery can also be called 14500 lithium-ion battery, which is also a rechargeable battery.

Voltage: 3.7v

Capacity: usually 600~900mAh.

Self-discharge Rate: low

Temperature Performance: operating temperature range -20°C to 60°C.

Cycle Life: 300-500 times

Advantages, Disadvantages and Applications of Different Types of AA Batteries

1. Carbon AA Battery

Advantages: low price, light weight, suitable for intermittent use.

Disadvantages: low capacity, short service life, poor high current discharge performance, easy to leak.

Application: suitable for low power consumption, infrequently used devices, such as remote controls, clocks, etc.

2. Alkaline AA Battery

Advantages: higher capacity than carbon batteries, longer storage life, cost-effective, not easy to leak.

Disadvantages: not rechargeable.

Application: suitable for medium power consumption devices such as remote controls, clocks, toys, portable audio equipment, etc.

3. Nickel-cadmium AA Battery

Advantages: strong high current discharge capability, more resistant to abuse than other rechargeable batteries.

Disadvantages: low capacity, memory effect, unfriendly to the environment.

Application: once widely used in portable electronic devices, such as cordless phones, emergency lighting, power tools, etc.

4. NiMH AA Battery

Advantages: reusable, economical and environmentally friendly, high current discharge capacity, high energy density.

Disadvantages: more expensive than disposable batteries, requires a dedicated charger.

Application: suitable for high-end devices such as digital cameras, portable game consoles, LED flashlights, remote control toys, etc.

5. Lithium-ion AA Battery

Advantages: reusable, high voltage, low self-discharge rate, light weight.

Disadvantages: requires a special charger, high price, cannot directly replace traditional AA batteries.

Application: suitable for equipment with high power or long working time, such as power tools, portable electronic devices, some camera accessories, etc.

Can Different Types of AA batteries be Replaced?

Alkaline and carbon AA batteries are both disposable batteries, have the same voltage, and are interchangeable in most cases.

The voltage of nickel-metal hydride batteries is slightly lower than that of alkaline and carbon batteries, and can be replaced for equipment with a certain voltage tolerance. However, devices that are sensitive to certain voltages may not operate or run low on power.

The nominal voltage of lithium-ion AA batteries is usually 3.7v, direct replacement may cause equipment damage. Best used only on devices designed to use lithium-ion AA batteries.

Therefore, different types of AA batteries are basically the same in physical size, but have significant differences in electrical characteristics and usage methods, and are not completely interchangeable.

Market Trends of Different Types of AA batteries

1. Carbon AA Battery

Although their market share has been gradually taken over by alkaline and rechargeable batteries, carbon AA batteries still have a certain demand in certain applications and markets due to their price advantage.

2. Alkaline AA Battery

Although rechargeable batteries have seen a growth in market share, alkaline AA batteries continue to maintain a steady market demand due to their convenience and low initial cost.

3. Nickel-cadmium AA Battery

Due to environmental issues and performance disadvantages, the market share of nickel-cadmium AA batteries continues to decline. They have been replaced by nickel-metal hydride or lithium-ion batteries in most consumer electronic products. Most countries no longer produce these batteries.

4. NiMH AA Battery

The NiMH AA battery market is stable, but faces competition from lithium-ion batteries. Some manufacturers have introduced low self-discharge (LSD) NiMH batteries to improve long-term storage performance.

5. Lithium-ion AA Battery

Lithium-ion batteries are currently a hot product in the battery market. But due to voltage and safety, lithium-ion AA batteries are not a direct replacement for traditional AA batteries.
